Rules for Babies aged 4-7 Months

As your child becomes more active and curious, they naturally become more independent. This is beneficial for building their confidence and should be encouraged. However, if they attempt something dangerous or destructive, you should intervene. In the first 6 months after birth, the best way to handle such situations is to redirect their attention with other activities or toys. Rules don't work during this period. It's only when your child is approaching 7 months and their memory strengthens that you can begin using various rules to guide them.

When initially setting rules, avoid being overly strict. The purpose of rules is education and guidance, not punishment. Generally, the most successful way to discipline a child is to reward them when they behave well and withdraw rewards when they don't. If your child starts crying for no apparent reason, first ensure they're not experiencing any discomfort. If they stop crying, reward them with extra attention, praise, and a hug. If they start crying again, give it some time before giving them attention again, speak to them firmly, and refrain from giving extra attention or hugs

The primary purpose of disciplining a child is to set boundaries, letting them know what is acceptable and what is not. Negative discipline strategies like hitting, yelling, or blaming should not be used; they are ineffective in both the short and long term. Try to help your child understand what they did wrong. If you notice them doing something they shouldn't, like pulling your hair, calmly say "don't do that" to stop them, gently remove their fingers from your hair, and redirect their attention to something else.
